Master of Science in Engineering: Logistics and Traffic

KU Leuven: Faculty of Engineering Science

The world of traffic evolves fast! Just think of the rise of the self-driving car. Besides the traditional governments, road admissions and public traffic firms, traffic becomes more than ever big business for trendy firms. Examples are Google, Tesla, and Uber or fun apps like Moovit and Waze. In most cities, you can already find car and bike sharing systems (e.g. Villo, Cambio, and Car2Go) and enterprises that provide completely integrated packages of Mobility-as-a-Service and want to ban private cars to the history lessons.

Are you one of the young ambitious engineers of this new generation and would you like to help this revolution?

The world of logistics is constantly changing. Familiar terms such as e-commerce are in fact a super dynamic logistic machine with a web-store as visible outing: when you click on ‘buy now’, somewhere in Utrecht or Dresden a machine pops into action and within 24 hours your purchase is delivered at your front door anywhere in Belgium. Behind the scenes, optimization stays the keyword. Airplanes, vans, and cargo-bikes today, maybe in the future drones or automatic vans, will deliver your packages. The same process appears in the supply chain of enterprises that constantly redesigns due to new players, different prices and new technologies like 3D printing since the old solutions became too expensive or dispensable.

Do you advance your business to be a logistic winner?

This master program forms engineering students in traffic and intelligent transportation systems (design, maintenance, and management of infrastructure and (public) transportation systems), and in logistics and transportation (supply chain engineering, distribution logistics, etc.).

The program is all about the complex interaction between different aspects and the possibility for optimization of processes both for logistic as for traffic. The focus is on the application of new (intelligent) transportation technologies.

Why engineers in logistics & traffic?

  • Society demands more mobility and logistics...
... but she accepts less and less (societal) costs
... and bumps more often into boundaries.
  • Fortunately, technology offers more and more possibilities to make traffic and logistics cleaner, more efficient, more reliable, more customized: ITS!
  • There are already engineers who make this I.T.S.-technology ...
... but there is a lack of engineers who can put I.T.S. into an optimal use.

What do you learn as a student logistics & traffic?

  • I.T.S.: intelligent transport systems.
    • to collect tools (eg. sensors, ICT, geographic data, data processing, modeling, optimization, OR)
    • to optimize processes in logistics and traffic
  • Processes viewed from the perspective of the user/company.
    • an educational line of logistics, business management, OR
    • Processes viewed from system perspective
  • An educational line of traffic, system design and system management, modeling.

In the context of society and business - economy, space, business management, safety/ergonomics.

Content and Practical Information

This master (in English - 120 credits - two years) is open to bachelors and masters in engineering and bio-engineering. It is also possible for masters in industrial engineering to follow the program.

The program (see figure) contains a number of basic subjects (top) and the master's thesis (bottom), a traffic learning trajectory (in yellow) and a logistics learning trajectory (in blue). Some courses (in green) also use elements of both trajectories. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are involved in almost all courses (implicitly or explicitly).

Structure of the Master in Logistics and Traffic (120 credits):

  • Preparatory program (up to 15 ECTS credits) (in case you have not followed these courses during your bachelor): Decision Making for Industrial Management (6sp) - Traffic Engineering (4sp) - Operational Management (5sp)
  • Common Core (58sp)
  • General interest courses (9-13 sp)
  • Master's Thesis (24sp): possible in cooperation with a company
  • Elective courses (29-10sp): from list of additional courses or free choice

More details and all courses of the program can be found in the official KU Leuven program book.

This master is a European-Accredited Engineering Master Degree Program.

Internationalization:

  • ATHENS weeks
  • Erasmus possibilities:
    • KTH Stockholm, TU Graz, EPFL Lausanne, Universita di Salerno
    • a comprehensive list of possible destinations
    • exchanges so far: Delft University, EPFL (2x)
  • Internships
